What is Hexanaut?
Hexanaut.io is an io game made by Exodragon Games where you control a snake-like tail and enclose hexagons to capture them and level up. You are safe on your own territory, but if you venture outside of it or into someone else’s, you become vulnerable — enemies can cut your tail and eliminate you from the match. The goal is not to capture the entire map but rather to reach 20% of it and become the King, then hold that crown for 3 minutes to win. However, once you become King, all other players will know your position and target you specifically, making defense just as important as expansion. Alternatively, you can win by eliminating all other players from the map entirely once you are King, since eliminated players cannot respawn while a King exists. The game also features airdrops that land regularly on your territory, giving you randomly assigned items like a Cannon that slices an opponent’s head, Scissors that cut any tail, a Capture Grenade that claims a chunk of territory on explosion, a Speed Cell for a temporary burst of movement, and a Brick Wall that blocks enemy movements. The game also features a ranking system, extensive character customization, and an intelligent matchmaking system that introduces AI bots during low player counts to ensure consistent and fair gameplay at any hour of the day.
Controls
Hexanaut.io can be controlled with either the mouse, where your character aims toward your cursor at all times, or with WASD and the arrow keys to change your direction. On mobile devices you can press and hold to move, with an optional virtual joystick available in the settings. Items collected from airdrops must be manually activated at the right moment by clicking, pressing Space, or tapping the on-screen button on mobile — they do not activate automatically, so timing your item use is an important part of high-level play. The core movement loop is simple to understand immediately — leave your territory to draw a trail, loop back to close it, and everything enclosed becomes yours — but developing the precision and spatial awareness to do this consistently under pressure from other players takes genuine practice. Getting good at Hexanaut.io requires a careful balance of aggressive expansion, constant situational awareness, and knowing exactly when to play it safe rather than going for a big land grab. Always be aware of your surroundings before making any move outside your territory — if you want to capture a large chunk of space, check around carefully and make sure there are no nearby players before committing, because a large loop takes time to close and leaves your tail exposed for much longer than a small one.

<-Tips to Dominate
Prioritize capturing totems whenever it is safe to do so, since the Speed Totem increases your movement by 5% and stacks with others, the Spreading Totem captures adjacent hexagons automatically for passive growth, the Spy Dish reveals enemy territories across the entire map, and the Teleporting Gate lets you reposition instantly when you are in danger or need to reinforce a weak border. Once you hit 20% and become the Hexanaut, shift your focus entirely to defense — stop overextending and instead patrol your borders to intercept players trying to chip away at your territory, since losing even a small portion of land to multiple attackers at once can drop you below the threshold and cost you the crown. Always keep an eye on nearby players and if you see someone getting close to your trail, return to your base immediately rather than trying to finish the loop — a failed loop means elimination, and no territory gain is worth throwing away your entire run. The best way to eliminate opponents is to cut their lines before they return to safety, so look for players who are far from their base and making long risky loops — those are the ones most vulnerable to a well-timed interception that removes them from the game entirely.
