What is FNAF 2?
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is a 2014 point-and-click survival horror game developed and published by Scott Cawthon. It is the second main installment in the Five Nights at Freddy’s series, and despite being called a sequel, the game actually takes place as a prequel set in November 1987. Players take on the role of night security guards Jeremy Fitzgerald and Fritz Smith, who must defend themselves from the restaurant’s hostile animatronic mascots. The game introduces a brand new cast of characters alongside the returning ones — including Toy Chica, Toy Bonnie, Toy Freddy, Balloon Boy, Mangle, and The Puppet — all of which are kid-friendly on the surface but terrifying at night. The story subtly references the infamous Bite of ’87, a major event in the franchise’s lore where an animatronic attacked a customer, adding layers of mystery and intrigue that encouraged the game’s massive fanbase to dig deep into its secrets. The game was a massive commercial success and helped cement the FNAF series as one of the most iconic horror franchises in gaming history.
Controls
Players cannot leave their office but have access to a flashlight and security cameras throughout the restaurant to monitor animatronic activity. Wearing a mask that looks like one of the animatronics allows the player to avoid being detected in most cases, though some animatronics are repelled via other methods. If the player is detected they will be jumpscared and experience a game over. Players have access to cameras, a flashlight, and a Freddy Fazbear mask — all of which are vital to surviving the night. The mask can be used whenever an animatronic is in the air vents to the sides of the office or if one is already in the office itself. The most vital mechanic in FNAF 2 is the music box found in CAM 11, which must be wound constantly by clicking and holding the Wind Up Music Box button — if it winds down completely, The Puppet will be unleashed and head straight for the office, and it cannot be stopped by either the mask or the flashlight. Surviving FNAF 2 requires juggling multiple tasks simultaneously while keeping your cool under enormous pressure, and developing the right habits early on is what separates players who make it to Night 5 from those who get stuck on Night 2. The single most important thing you can do at the start of every single night is wind the music box in CAM 11 immediately — you are far more likely to get killed by neglecting the music box than by any animatronic catching you while you are in your cameras, so never let it run low. The old animatronics — Chica, Bonnie, and Freddy — are the most dangerous threats in the game because they can essentially teleport anywhere at any moment, so you must always be ready to throw on the Freddy Mask the instant you lower your camera, since you have only a fraction of a second to react when one of them appears.

Foxy is a special case because he cannot be fooled by the Freddy Mask at all — the only way to deal with him is to flash your flashlight at him two or three times with quick bursts until he retreats, which is also exactly why Balloon Boy shutting off your flashlight is such a devastating problem. Mangle is best handled by listening for static — whenever you hear it while sitting in your office with your camera down, put on the mask immediately and keep it on until the sound stops completely. Golden Freddy is the most unforgiving enemy in the game, giving you absolutely no reaction time — the only way to counter him is to flip your mask on at the exact moment you bring your camera down, with no exceptions. A good overall strategy is to develop a consistent rotation: check the left vent light, flash the hallway, check the right vent light, pull up the camera to wind the music box, lower it with the mask already in position, and repeat. Staying disciplined with this loop and never panicking is ultimately what gets you through the hardest nights alive.
