











































































Riddle School is a classic browser-based point-and-click puzzle adventure game originally created by a then eleven-year-old developer known as JonBro, now going by the name Jonochrome, and first released on Newgrounds on May 25, 2006. The game was heavily inspired by Tom Fulp’s iconic Newgrounds title Pico’s School, borrowing its core layout of navigating a hallway, entering classrooms, collecting items, and interacting with characters to progress, though Riddle School takes a far tamer and more wholesome approach by removing all violence and instead centering the entire experience around clever puzzle solving and creative thinking. Interestingly, the game’s original concept was far more action-oriented, envisioned as a parody of the popular Madness Combat Flash animations of the era, which would have seen the main character escape school by shooting his way out. That idea was wisely abandoned early in development, though a few leftover traces of the original concept remain in the finished game, including several objects rendered in the grayscale aesthetic of Madness Combat that were never properly colorized before release, and the word “Mathness” written on a classroom chalkboard as a quiet nod to the series that inspired the scrapped version. The story follows Phil Eggtree, a student at Riddle Elementary School who finds himself stuck in the Special Class for the Insane after an incident where he teased a classmate, and is now determined to do whatever it takes to escape the building and get back to his freedom. The player takes control of Phil and must explore the school by clicking on objects and characters throughout the classrooms and hallway, picking up items, combining them in creative ways, talking to teachers and other students to gather information, and piecing together a clever chain of events that will ultimately allow Phil to unlock the school’s front doors and walk out into the open air. The puzzle design is intentionally simple and approachable given the game’s origins as a personal Flash project by a young developer, but the solutions are creative, humorous, and satisfying in a way that made the game genuinely memorable to the enormous audience that discovered it on Newgrounds and various Flash game portals in the years following its release.
One particularly quirky design choice in the original version was that pressing any keyboard key during gameplay would instantly reset the game back to its opening cutscene, a feature deliberately implemented to prevent players from using the Tab key to highlight all clickable objects and bypass the puzzles, though this mechanic was removed in the later Legacy Edition remaster. The game accumulated well over nine hundred thousand views on Newgrounds alone and inspired an entire series of sequels, with Riddle School 2 arriving just months after the original in November 2006, followed by Riddle School 3, Riddle School 4, and Riddle School 5, each growing in length, ambition, and narrative complexity. The sequels follow Phil through middle school, high school, and college before the story takes a dramatic and unexpected turn in Riddle School 5, which transplants the action to an alien spaceship and introduces a surprisingly involved science fiction storyline that no one familiar with the simple elementary school escape of the first game could have anticipated.

The series continued into the Riddle Transfer games, which were originally planned as a five-part saga but were abruptly cancelled after just one installment in 2012 when the creator grew burned out on the characters and formula. However, JonBro returned to the series on the tenth anniversary of the original game in 2016 to release Riddle Transfer 2 as a proper and complete finale to the entire storyline, giving the dedicated fanbase the closure they had waited years to receive. A Legacy Edition remaster of the original games was also released, featuring improved resolution, better audio quality, refined dialogue, and quality of life improvements that make the classic entries more accessible to modern players.
